The Department of Biology participates in running two undergraduate study programmes covering six semesters: Biology and Chemistry and Biology. The graduate study programme Biology and Chemistry, specialising in Education, covers a duration of four semesters. The study programmes run by the Department of Biology leads to the acquisition of knowledge and competencies helping students master theoretical knowledge, laboratory work, field research, scientific-research work and professional practice. The Department of Biology participates in running classes in the undergraduate study programme Nutrition covering a duration of six semesters. The study programme Nutrition enables the acquisition of fundamental knowledge from fields in the natural sciences, professional knowledge in nutrition, legislation as well as sociology and food psychology. Since the 2018/2019 academic year, the study programme Nutrition has not been enrolling any new students. The Department of Biology participates in running two doctoral postgraduate university study programmes organised at the Faculty of Science: Biophysics, Education Research in the Natural and Technical Sciences, specialisation in Biology. Teaching personnel at the Department of Biology also participate in running two lifelong learning programmes: Supplementary Pedagogic, Psychological, Didactic and Methodical Education, enabling students to acquire pedagogic competences essential for teaching primary and secondary school pupils. Since 2017, a number of international summer schools have been organised as summer schools at the University of Split called the Split Summer School. Since 2018, teaching personnel at the Department of Biology have participated in the Centre for Excellence in Natural Science in the County of Split-Dalmatia, working with gifted children, encouraging and directing their interest in biology and the natural sciences. Teaching personnel and students at the Department of Biology are also very active at the Science Festival, Arboretum and Botanical Garden Days, and other events that popularise (natural) science.
