Making sense of biological data sets using statistics

Sažetak predavanja:

Due to technical developments in chemistry, it is now possible to measure multiple large omics datasets in large epidemiological and clinical studies. These datasets represent different biological aspects of disease mechanisms and are complimentary (see John and Suzy at www.mimomics.eu). The hope is that the abundance of information will provide better understanding of underlying disease mechanisms and accurate prediction models enabling patient targeted screening and treatment.

Statistical bioinformatics is the field which tries to make senses of these datasets. The goal is to extract the relevant information from the data, which is challenging due to sparsity, high dimensionality and noise. Specific challenges are to deal with data cleaning, data integration and linking and the presence of high correlation within and between datasets (Morris et al, 2017; Houwing-Duistermaat et al, 2017).

In this talk I will share my experience in the statistical analysis of multiple omics datasets. I will present various research questions, the available data and the statistical techniques for answering these questions.
