The university study programme Mathematics and Physics leads to the acquisition of competences necessary for mathematics and physics teachers. It is run by the Department of Physics and the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Science in Split. The basis of the programme is the long tradition of study programmes for mathematics and physics teachers which began with the establishment of the Higher Pedagogic School in Split in 1945 and the goal of training physics and mathematics teachers for the needs of primary and secondary schools in Dalmatia.
Students can enrol into the study programme after having acquired a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Physics from the undergraduate study programme or some other related study programme, subject to passing of the required bridging courses. Duration of the study programme is 4 semesters (2 academic years). Passing all exams and defending the graduate thesis leads to 120 ECTS credits and a master’s degree in Education Research in Mathematics and Physics (mag. educ. math. et phys.).
Continuing studies is possible in most postgraduate study programmes in physics, subject to passing the required bridges courses.
The study programme supplements the foundational concepts of mathematics and physics from the undergraduate study programme, especial the concepts used in school classes. Students are taught to apply fundamental experimental methods, analyse measured data as well as conduct and interpret demonstrative experiments. They acquire knowledge necessary in applying ICT technology in multimedia processes and presenting the syllabus. Elective courses offer students the ability to decide on their specialisation.
The master’s degree in Education Research in Mathematics and Physics enables graduates to become mathematics and physics teachers in primary and secondary schools, while their acquired competences give them the ability to undertake complex tasks in the economic sector, public sector and state administration. These jobs require abilities in analysis, modelling and solving complex problems, systems and processes, as well as abilities in complex statistical data analysis and the application of information technology. This synergy of knowledge and skills in mathematics and physics gives graduates the ability to work in research laboratories at scientific and professional institutions and in various industries.
